Young Adults Talking
Women Like You

Fulshear is a residential and transitional treatment program for young adult women in their late teens and early twenties. Our clients generally come from another treatment facility, a youth program, hospital, or straight from home. The young women coming to us need support in managing behavioral health challenges, living independently, and building healthy relationships.

Single-Gender Treatment

For a young woman in her late teens or early twenties, the thought of being around only girls 24/7 will have many women saying, “I’ll pass, thanks”. While coed treatment programs can be beneficial for some, single-gender residential programs have many advantages over co-ed treatment.

  • Generally speaking, women communicate and process differently than men. This makes single-gender treatment more efficient and effective.
  • Women often feel safer in a single-gender environment when treatment touches sensitive issues, such as sexual acting out, trauma, and abuse.
  • Women, unfortunately and for various reasons, tend to speak up less in the presence of men. This can make group therapy, in particular, very challenging.
  • Both men and women are distracted from therapy and same-sex friendships in the presence of the opposite gender.
  • Old patterns of unhealthy romantic involvement are tougher to interrupt and correct in a coed setting.
  • Residential treatment centers for women usually result in more confidence, better boundaries, and a clearer sense of self.
  • All-girls treatment has been shown to facilitate emotional engagement, verbal confidence, and self-advocacy for clients.

While you might worry about being surrounded by only women, you’ll be amazed by the relationships you build with the other women on The Ranch. Our clients build meaningful, lifelong relationships with one another and support each other on their path to health and independence.

Types of Therapy

Fulshear offers various types of evidence-based treatment. While some young women make the most therapeutic progress in individual therapy, others thrive in group settings or experiential sessions. Whatever your preference is, our program has therapeutic diversity so that you can explore different paths to healing.

Types of Therapy

Each client at Fulshear will participate in weekly individual therapy. You’ll build a trusting relationship with your therapist and have the opportunity to process through and find solutions to personal struggles and co-occurring disorders.

Group Therapy

Working through issues in a group setting helps improve communication skills, increase your ability to express yourself, and practice vulnerability in a safe place. Fulshear has several group options so that you can attend the groups most applicable to you. Examples include adoption/attachment, depression, addiction, body image, PTSD, personality disorders, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship skills, academic skills, and healthy sexual boundaries.

Family Therapy

Each Fulshear client and her parents will participate in family therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to work through issues that may have held the family back in the past. As you continue to move toward independence, your parents might need coaching on how to balance appropriate support with letting go. Strong, healthy families are key to preventing relapse after treatment.

Adult Attachment Model

The adult attachment model helps both clinicians and clients view diagnoses through the lens of attachment, which is at the root of several behavioral health issues. Using the adult attachment model will help you understand yourself better, and will help your therapist be more creative in their work with you.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy helps clients practice skills to cope with intense emotions and maintain healthy relationships. DBT is successful in helping treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), eating disorders, self-harm, addiction, and other challenges.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavior therapy focuses on thought and emotion patterns, and how those lead to destructive behaviors. The goal of CBT is to disrupt these patterns and replace them with healthier alternatives.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Initially developed to treat PTSD and traumatic stress, EMDR has also proven effect in treating eating disorders, anxiety related to certain events, panic attacks, and addictions.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is ideal for young women who have already done deep therapeutic processing and need help applying what they’ve learned into real life. This technique is most commonly used in individual therapy after you have developed a relationship with your therapist.

Equine-Assisted Therapy

Talk therapy isn’t for everyone. Some individuals do their best therapeutic work in an experiential setting, such as equine (or horse) therapy. Horses innately reflect the emotions of the human working with them and change their reactions as you shift your own emotions. Whether you love horses or are terrified of them, you’ll form a bond as they teach you about communication and problem-solving.

Recovery Programming

We know that it can be difficult to address underlying mental health challenges when addiction is prominent in your life. If you’re struggling with an addictive disorder, you’ll have recovery-focused programming with addiction-specific groups and therapy sessions. We’ll work to treat not only the addiction but the underlying mental health issues as well.

Healthy, Strong, & Influential

These three words are how we want every woman at Fulshear to be described. The clients at Fulshear learn to care for themselves (healthy), have internal strength (strong), and be a compelling force for good (influential).

Length of Stay

Each client has different needs, and thus the length of stay at Fulshear varies from person to person. However, the average time you’ll spend here is 9 to 11 months. Many women coming to Fulshear need some time at The Ranch for more intense treatment and recovery help. The average time spent at The Ranch is about 3 months. After The Ranch, you’ll live in the off-campus apartments. The time at the apartments is about 6 to 9 months. This longer time period allows clients to feel at home, find a job or attend school, and get into a routine of caring for themselves and balancing everyday life with recovery.

Location

Fulshear is located outside Houston, Texas. The Ranch is located on 34 serene acres in Needville. The transition apartments offer more of city life and are located in Stafford.

Houston is known for being one of the most diverse cities in the United States. It is the largest city in the South with ample school, work, and volunteer opportunities. You can find just about anything you love in Houston!
