“Dr. Stephen Porges’ polyvagal approach to therapy is based on the understanding that the autonomic nervous system is molded by early experiences and transformed with ongoing events, but that response patterns can be interrupted and changed, and we can create new patterns. Our polyvagal group begins with clients reviewing polyvagal concepts and learning about the different components of their nervous systems. After foundational information is absorbed, clients have the opportunity to participate in detailed exercises with clear directions that keep them actively engaged in the reorganization of their response patterns. The polyvagal group relies heavily on the leading clinical translator of Porges’ Polyvagal Theory, Deb Dana, LCSW. Dana has created a pocket-sized polyvagal card deck that provides prompts that clients utilize to enhance their understanding of their nervous systems and guide them through the process of tuning into it. Our polyvagal group provides nervous system support and works toward attunement with one’s own body.”
